In addition to representing the first issue for the type and denomination, the 1795 Draped Bust Half Eagle (Buy on eBay) with the small eagle reverse also represents the first gold coin ever produced by the United States Mint. This important status makes the issue very popular with collectors.
The coin had a mintage of 8,707 pieces, but carries a higher than typical survival rate. While circulated examples remain relatively available, the issue becomes rare in uncirculated condition. A few proof-like pieces exist and these have been called “presentation pieces” in the past.
One of the finest known pieces graded PCGS MS-65 realized $586,500 in 2008.
